Characteristics and Genetic Control of Rhizome Coloration in Red Rhizome Lotus

Characteristics and inheritance of rhizome coloration in the red lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) ‘Tomohiro’ were investigated to achieve stable production breeding cultivars. Rhizome proceeded from basal internodes distal ones during growing stage, enlarged rhizomes was completed October. No individuals with both white one plant found, there no a mottled pattern or an intermediate color between white. The skin flesh synchronized plants. It therefore estimated that controlled by same gene. Rhizomes all selfed plants cultivars white, respectively, F1 generated crossing F2 self-pollination divided into 3:1 ratio. These results suggested is governed single locus, designated RHIZOME COLOR (RHC), dominant (Rhc) recessive (rhc) alleles.
